Why do periods occur, how much leave is needed, should the law be implemented across the country?

The Odisha government has announced to give leave to women working in government and private sectors during menstruation. Some private companies in the country also give menstrual leave, but should this law be implemented across the country?

Women working in private and government sectors in Odisha will get leave during periods. Women can take this leave on the first or second day of periods.

Earlier, period leave was announced for women in Bihar as well. Recently, the Supreme Court also asked the central government to prepare a model on period leave for women.

Some private companies in the country also give menstrual leave, but should this law be implemented across the country? Before this, let us know why women have periods.

Experts say that when a girl matures, her body is ready for pregnancy. During this time, eggs start forming in the ovaries of women. For this, a layer is formed in the uterus every month.

It contains blood and mucus. Once a month, an egg comes out of the ovary and waits for the sperm to fertilize it. But when the egg is not fertilized, blood and mucus come out from the uterus. This causes bleeding in women. This is called periods.

Do everyone’s periods last the same length of time?

This bleeding can last from 3 to 7 days in women. In some women, bleeding can be heavy and in some it can be less. Some women have less trouble during periods while some have more.

In many cases, periods do not come on time. This can happen due to diseases like PCOD, PCOS. In today’s time, periods start at the age of 14 years, but if menstruation does not start at the age of 14 to 16 years or comes once or twice and stops, then it can be a sign of amenorrhea disease. In such a situation, there is a need to consult a doctor.

Is there a need for leave during periods?

Dr Saloni Chaddha of the Gynecology Department at Safdarjung Hospital says that most women face a lot of trouble on the first day of their periods.

There is severe pain in the lower abdomen and mental health is also affected due to hormonal changes during this period. Some women have to face problems like headache, nausea, leg pain and back pain during periods.

This pain is more in the first two days of periods. During this time they need to rest. In such a situation, work also gets affected. Therefore, women should definitely get leave on the first day of periods.

This rule should be implemented in the entire country. By doing this, women will be able to rest during periods and their problems will be reduced.
