Breastfeeding and Baby’s Immune System: The health and physical development of a newborn baby depends on the diet you are giving him.
Pediatricians always recommend that the baby should be breastfed right from birth as it is the best diet for him, and it is also necessary to improve his immunity. Dr. Tripti Raheja, Lead Consultant (Obstetrics and Gynecology) of CK Birla Hospital Delhi, explained how breastfeeding boosts the immunity of the child, which can protect him from many diseases.
The presence of antibodies
Mother’s milk contains high levels of antibodies, especially IgA, which protect the mucus membranes in the baby’s throat, lungs and intestines.
The presence of WBCs
Mother’s milk contains live white blood cells which provide extra support to the immune system. This means that if you breastfeed, the risk of diseases for the child will be less.
Amount of proteins and enzymes
Mother’s milk contains many types of proteins and enzymes like Lactoferrin, Lysozyme and Oligosaccharides which prevent the growth of bacteria.
Probiotic Properties
Mother’s milk has probiotic properties. Therefore, it promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria, which helps in improving overall immunity.
Prevention of inflammation
Breast milk contains anti-inflammatory factors such as cytokines, which reduce inflammation and allergic reactions.
